Inspirational quotes and self-help teachings encourage us to not waste time regretting missed opportunities. This sounds like great advice. However, I can think of one area that it does not apply -- travel opportunities.
Watching U.S. Spring Breakers fan out across the globe is a reminder of how we value and experience travel differently at each stage in our life. Taking advantage of opportunities to broaden our view of the world through travel should not be postponed.
I often hear clients and friends explain how they went to an exciting destination for work, but did not have time to absorb the culture. This decision is sometimes conveyed with pride for dedication to their work, instead of a lack of valuing personal development. This is a missed opportunity on many levels.
3 reasons why you should regret the road less traveled:
Prioritizing personal growth. Allocate resources and make decisions that expand your perspective of the world. Experiencing new cultures adds depth to life.
Setting an example of work/life balance. Encourage your company or team to value personal development. Travel opportunities enhance creative inspiration and new ideas which benefits not only the individual, but also the company.
Pushing past boundaries. Challenging your abilities is the best way to expand your comfort zone. Push yourself mentally and physically to find new passions and you will be rewarded with more ways to find fulfillment.
On your next business trip, spend the time and money to go earlier or stay later in a new location. Explain how your company will benefit from your enriching experience. Give your family the chance to respect your needs and be happy for you. Put yourself first. You will not have this exact opportunity again. Take full advantage of it!
How do you push yourself to see the world differently?
