Musical Monday -- Good Old Days

Living in the present

Today’s Musical Monday selection is currently on the charts and in my car every time I drive. Good Old Days, sung by Macklemore (34) and Kesha (30) is about living in the present, while appreciating the past. The lyrics, written by artists in their early 30’s, feel achingly nostalgic.

Good Old Days, released on October 9, 2017, is the third track from Macklemore's second solo studio album, Gemini. The song is a wake-up call reminding us that we are currently living in what will someday be considered the “good old days.”

Macklemore raps about both high and low moments in his life and the need to focus on “now.” The singer spent most of his twenties trying to combat his addictions and self-destructive way of life.

Kesha Tweeted, "My new song with Macklemore reminds me of being 16 chasing wild dreams not knowing those moments would be so precious."

“I wish somebody would have told me, babe
That someday, these will be the good old days…

Never thought we'd get old, maybe we're still young
Maybe you always look back and think it was better than it was
Maybe these are the moments
Maybe I've been missin' what it's about
Been scared of the future, thinkin' about the past
While missin' out on now”

~ Macklemore and Kesha, Good Old Days

The definition of the “good old days” changes with age and perspective. It’s often more comfortable to reminisce about the glory days, than to face the challenges of the present or the uncertainty of the future.

The biggest problem with living in the past is that it robs you of the opportunity to enjoy the present.

The secret of the “good old days” is that they are not only in the past, but are actually in the making every day.

What periods in your life have you been extremely happy? What currently inspires you? How do you approach the opportunities in each new day?
