There have been over 400 recordings of today’s Musical Monday selection.
Countless artists have sung Stand By Me over the last 57 years. But the version everyone is talking about is the South London Kingdom Choir’s performance in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, at the royal wedding on Saturday.
American singer-songwriter Ben E. King originally recorded Stand By Me in 1961. Written by King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller the song symbolizes love, friendship, spiritual connection and even social solidarity. Stand By Me was popular during the Civil Rights movement in the U.S. and even during calls for social progress in Thailand in 2014.
Moments after the royal wedding on Saturday journalists were speculating about the selection of Stand By Me for the service.
A Time article by Megan McCulskey stated, “Considering the history behind “Stand By Me,” the predominantly black Kingdom Choir performing the song at Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry seems to be symbolic of this transition.”
In 2015, the original version of Stand By Me was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the U.S. Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Apparently it still is.
I don’t know if the now Duchess of Sussex chose this song as an anthem for social change or, like brides for over 50 years, as a tribute to the power of her love. Either way she has given us something to discuss besides her gown.
“Whenever you're in trouble, won't you stand by me
Oh stand by me,
Oh won't you stand now?
Stand by me”
~ Ben. E. King, Stand By Me
